What is VirtualTri?

VirtualTri is South Africa’s first virtual triathlon league. You race on your own time, track your results through our app or website, and earn points, XP, medals, and rankings. It’s triathlon — made flexible, accessible, and community-driven.

General

Do I have to be an experienced triathlete to join?

Not at all! VirtualTri is perfect for beginners. You’ll start in the Social League, where you can build confidence, fitness, and racing experience at your own pace.

Is this an official league?

VirtualTri is independently run and currently in collaboration talks with Triathlon South Africa (TSA). Depending on their involvement, TSA-licensed athletes may receive discounts or be eligible for virtual licensing benefits in future.

Getting Started

How do I sign up?

You can register through our website or the VirtualTri app. You’ll complete a short onboarding questionnaire, agree to the waiver, choose your league, and get started.

What’s the onboarding questionnaire for?

It helps assign your starting XP (experience points) so that you’re placed in the appropriate league. This keeps competition fair and engaging for all levels.

What equipment do I need?

Any GPS-enabled fitness tracker, smartphone app (on Strava), or treadmill/bike computer will work. You don’t need fancy gear — just honesty and commitment.

Racing & Submissions

When do events take place?

Every weekend during the league season. You can race anytime between Friday 06:00 and Sunday 20:00, and you must submit your results by Monday 10:00.

How do I submit results?

Through the app or website. Upload your times and (if in the Elite League) a photo or screenshot for proof. Social League participants are encouraged but not required to submit proof.

What counts as an official event for bonus points?

Any real-world timed event — including triathlons, cycling races, running events, or even a Parkrun — qualifies for bonus points if proof of timing is submitted.

Can I use indoor equipment?

Yes! Pool swims, treadmill runs, and indoor bikes are allowed. Just be sure to follow our submission rules (e.g., pausing the treadmill when you stop, using proper distance tracking), as outlined in our Rules & Regulations.

XP & League Divisions

What is XP and how do I earn it?

XP (Experience Points) is your level in the league. It determines whether you’re in the Social or Elite division. XP is earned through onboarding, racing, achievements, and consistency. Max XP is 99. In future, further leagues will be added to accommodate all levels of athletes.

Can my XP change?

Yes — XP can increase with participation and decrease if you’re inactive. League management may also cap or adjust XP to keep competition fair. If you do other big events, please let us know, and we will gladly adjust your XP level to keep you in a competitive league and bring out the very best athlete in you!

Entry, Pricing & Rewards

What’s the difference between Basic and Full entry?

BASIC ENTRY: Digital medal and finisher certificate only. Bragging rights & acheivement badges are on the house.

FULL ENTRY: Physical medal shipped to you + digital rewards (as in basic entry).

Elite League participants must choose Full Entry for now.

How do I pay?

You can pay monthly (email us to enter), per season (with a discount), or annually (get 4 seasons for the price of 3). Virtual races are included for league participants.

Do I get anything for finishing a season?

Yes! Points, badges, and your leaderboard ranking are published. Winners receive trophies or medals (depending on your league and entry type). Uhm…did we mention bragging rights?

Virtual Races

What are Virtual Races

They’re special events held once a month that are open to league and non-league participants. League athletes receive automatic Basic Entry.

Do Virtual Races count toward my league points?

Yes! Your performance in these races contributes to your season score.

Technical & Support

What if I miss the submission deadline?

Unfortunately, late results cannot be counted. Please submit before Monday 10:00 each week to remain eligible for points.

What if my results don’t show up correctly?

Contact our support team and we’ll help fix any errors. You can also request manual reviews of XP or race results.
